Weathering..

A nice today so I sat in the garden with my airbrush and had a go at weathering some of the stock for the HO layout. (The name 'Dreary' is being re-considered!). Anyway.. I'm quite a novice with the airbrush and I have mixed feelings about the results.
I didn't copy any one picture too closely, but tried to learn something from looking at pictures of the prototype. I think I need to develop a lighter touch.. a little more subtlety.

Here's another tip that you could use for weathering your freight cars. This tip is best used for freight cars with white lettering only and it's a simple dry-brush technique.

Just a piece of a cosmetic sponge applicator (preferably triangular in shape) and dip just the tip in white paint.

Naturally, you're gonna get an excess amount from the start so you take some of the excess off by wiping it across on a piece of paper towel. Do a few test streaks on a dark sheet of paper first before applying to your railroad car.

Barely touching the car itself, lightly apply streaks under the lettering to give the impression that the original paint is worn and streaking.
